FSSAI Issues Notices to HUL and Nestlé India Over Horlicks and Nescafé Labelling Claims Good Morning Nagpur
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued official notices to FMCG giants Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) and Nestlé India over concerns regarding misleading claims, inconsistent labelling, and non-compliance across several widely consumed products. The regulatory scrutiny centers on packaging declarations and promotional messaging that may misinform buyers about the actual nutritional and classification details of these items.
For Hindustan Unilever Limited, the regulator has questioned the marketing claims made on products such as Horlicks Women’s Plus (Chocolate Nutrition Drink) and Horlicks Mother’s Plus Kesar. Key health and wellness assertions featured prominently on the packaging—specifically those promising bone strength, healthy birth weight support, and "No Added Sugar"—have come under strict regulatory review to determine whether they comply with established food and advertising safety standards.
At the same time, Nestlé India is facing scrutiny over its ready-to-drink coffee range—including Nescafé Intense Café Cappuccino Flavour, Nescafé Choco Mocha, and Nescafé Chilled Latte—as well as its specialized nutritional product, Resource Renal Vanilla Flavour Powder. The authority identified discrepancies where physical product labelling and online descriptions did not match the declared food categories. In addition, marketing phrases used in digital promotions, such as claims that drinks are "crafted with the goodness of flavoured double toned milk," have been flagged by the regulator for clarification.
Both companies have been instructed to submit formal explanations within a designated timeframe to address the regulator's concerns. The issuance of these notices serves as a preliminary inquiry rather than a confirmed violation, and the FSSAI will determine whether any corrective actions, penalties, or packaging modifications are required once the companies submit their responses.
