Maharashtra is preparing immediate relief measures for farmers affected by the ongoing drought-like situation caused by deficient rainfall and prolonged dry spells. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the ground situation during visits to drought-affected areas of Washim and Amravati, where crops including soybean, cotton, urad and tur have been impacted.

The state government has said it will begin relief measures under the first trigger of the drought-relief framework rather than waiting for financial assistance from the Centre. The proposed support includes direct assistance to affected farmers, measures to address drinking-water and cattle-fodder shortages, foodgrain support and assistance for Rabi cultivation wherever adequate water is available.

Authorities are also planning to undertake water-conservation and employment-generating works, including desilting of lakes and water bodies and repairs or construction of water-conservation structures. These measures are intended to address immediate rural needs while improving water availability in affected areas.

The government has also indicated that assistance will be provided to help ensure that the education of children from affected farming families is not disrupted. Officials will continue assessing the situation, including areas that may require further review under subsequent drought triggers.

As of September 25, 2026, the state has announced that a formal order on relief for affected areas is expected, while the detailed implementation and eligibility of individual relief measures will depend on the government order and subsequent assessments.

The focus now remains on delivering assistance to affected farming communities, addressing water and fodder shortages, and supporting agricultural activity wherever conditions permit.
