The Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Tax Assessment and Collection Special Committee has sought a 50% reduction in penalties on outstanding property tax for economically weaker sections and small plot owners. The proposal comes amid the civic body’s ongoing property tax recovery drive across the city.

According to the report, the committee submitted its representation to NMC Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Itankar, requesting that the recovery process should take into account the financial difficulties faced by economically weaker citizens, daily-wage earners and residents of slum areas.

The panel has also raised concerns about cases where property owners, particularly in areas on the city’s outskirts, allegedly did not receive demand bills for several years but later faced recovery or attachment proceedings for accumulated dues. It has called for verification of whether proper demand notices were served before enforcement action was initiated.

The proposed relief does not seek a waiver of the principal property tax amount. Instead, the committee has requested a time-bound 50% concession on accumulated penalties, along with clearer information about outstanding dues and available payment or instalment options.

The proposal comes while NMC is conducting an intensified recovery campaign targeting long-pending property tax dues. As of September 25, 2026, the proposed penalty relief remains a request and is not an approved waiver scheme.
