World Consumer Rights Day 2026: “Safe Products, Confident Consumers”

New Delhi | March 15, 2026 — As the world celebrates World Consumer Rights Day, the spotlight remains on the theme "Safe Products, Confident Consumers." This annual observance serves as a vital reminder that an informed consumer is the backbone of a fair and transparent economy.

In a rapidly evolving marketplace, the Indian government, alongside state departments like Maharashtra's Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Protection Department, is intensifying efforts to shield citizens from misinformation, substandard goods, and digital fraud.
The Six Pillars of Consumer Strength
Under the current consumer protection regime, every citizen is entitled to six fundamental rights that ensure market transparency:
 * Right to Security: Protection against goods and services hazardous to life or property.
 * Right to Information: Access to accurate facts regarding quality, quantity, price, and ingredients.
 * Right to Choose: Freedom to select from a variety of options without forced selling.
 * Right to be Heard: The assurance that consumer interests will receive due consideration at appropriate forums.
 * Right to Redressal: The legal right to seek compensation for defective products or unfair trade practices.
 * Right to Consumer Education: The power to acquire knowledge to stay vigilant against exploitation.
Modern Protection for the Digital Age
While the Consumer Protection Act of 1986 laid the foundation, the Consumer Protection Act of 2019 (effective since July 20, 2020) has modernized these safeguards for the e-commerce era. Key features include:
 * Product Liability: Manufacturers and sellers are now directly held liable for any harm caused by defective products.
 * Strict Ad Rules: For the first time, "misleading advertisements" are clearly defined, with heavy penalties for deceptive marketing.
 * Mediation Cells: Speedier dispute resolution through mediation rooms at District, State, and National levels.
 * E-Commerce Oversight: Online transactions and digital platforms are now fully under the purview of consumer law.
Digital Empowerment: The e-Jagriti Portal
The government has revolutionized the grievance process through the e-Jagriti Portal. This digital system allows consumers to:
 * File complaints and upload documents from home.
 * Pay fees and track case status online.
 * Receive real-time updates via SMS and email.

The Vigilant Consumer’s Checklist
Experts urge consumers to remain "conscious" by following these safety protocols:
 * Verify Certification: Always look for BIS, FSSAI, Agmark, or ISO marks.
 * Check the Fine Print: Never skip reading the Manufacturing/Expiry dates and the MRP.
 * Cyber Safety: Never share OTPs or PINs while shopping online.
 * Ask for Receipts: A valid bill is your primary legal weapon in any dispute.
As the theme suggests, when products are safe and consumers are confident, the entire society becomes empowered. Be Aware, Exercise Your Rights . In an era of online shopping and digital deals, your awareness is your best defense. Don't let misinformation or substandard products win!
